Bummer, dude

Top things that make me wish I could go back to bed and start over again: 1. Corey Haim is dead. That's the headline in the entertainment rags this a.m. The star of Lucas, The Lost Boys, and a host of lame teen flicks from the '80s apparently had a drug overdose. Watch out Other Corey (Corey Feldman)...these things often come in threes. Quick...who's the third Corey? 2. I woke up with a sore throat. I'm currently taking bets as to whether it's allergies or a virus. I'm guessing allergies. If I had to pinpoint, I'd say mold spores. We currently reside in a swamp. 3. We're not supposed to see the sun until sometime next week. That certainly doesn't help the drying-out process. Of course, neither does the rain we're supposed to get through Saturday. 4. I have no editing work to do, which means I'm going to have to work on coming up with my goals for this upcoming year. These will be goals that support the overarching goals of our company. And &q

Thanks for the idea. Now go away.

I haven't been to a work-related conference in years. You know, the kind where you go listen to experts in your field talk about the future of your field and where you fit in. It's also the kind where you get to meet other people who do what you do and find out their joys and concerns and how those compare to your own. Last time out, I was a higher-education-publication editor struggling to figure out how to write stunning admissions materials. I learned some. I had some fantastic meals and conversations in Chicago. I got away from the office and recharged my writing and editing batteries. Fast forward to this year. I'm a copyeditor for an assessment development company...a world-renowned leader in its field. I realize we've been struggling like eve

My book

I'm in the mood to start writing again. That is, in THEORY I'm in the mood. Mostly, I think of 400 things I should do instead. I just need to set aside a block of time each day and DO IT. I may be drinking a lot more coffee in the evenings. And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt. -- Sylvia Plath There's nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein. -- Walter Wellesley "Red" Smith Writers are not just people who sit down and write. They hazard themselves. Every time you compose a book your composition of yourself is at stake. -- E.L. Doctorow If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. -- Toni Morrison
