What's on the menu

I'm on day 3 of "detox" as I'm calling it. I have a splitting headache, thanks to no caffeine since Friday. I went cold turkey. I'm sure I'm hell to live with.

I'm sorry, but even vegans aren't this militant and radical about what they say NO to. As long as it's fair trade, I think most of them drink coffee. But I made a deal with myself to do this for three weeks and see how I feel at the end.

So far, I've not been starving. Tofu is now the number one staple in my diet. Yay, soy! I was saddened to learn that dried cranberries have added sugar, so ixnay on my favorite nuts-and-berries trail mix. Guess I'll have to concoct my own. My favorite recipe so far has been "tofu scramble" from the kitchen of Oprah's diet gurus. I'll post it sometime soon.

Forgive me if you're just not into these posts on my current wacky lifestyle choice. I'm sure it'll lose its quirky newness soon. I'm saving the daily food diary entries and most of my musings for my personal, hand-written journal. You're welcome, more than happy to spare you the banal details of my day.

I will offer up a few interesting recipes and food finds along the way. For example, I might describe the delights of millet bread. Tim picked up the loaf of wheat-and-gluten-free bread, with great effort, and groaned, saying, "Wow. Don't drop that on your foot. You'll lose some toes." It's actually quite grainy and tasty, with some Earth Balance vegan buttery spread and spreadable fruit.

Just take my word for it. Go eat your Whopper with cheese and curly fries, then. Be that way. (And enjoy a Diet Coke for me.)

How do you cook your tofu? And what level of firmness do you get? We tried to make our own once and it turned out disastrously. Please post yummy tofu recipes!
**can you still have sushi?

I've wondered how it was going. Especially the "no caffeine" part! Will be glad to hear the details.

So, I Changed My Mind

More than four years ago, the blog and I parted ways. I needed a change. A whole lot happened in my world since then. I switched jobs a couple times. My kid went from an elementary school tween to a teenage high schooler. We built a new house and moved. Both my parents and my sister have passed. The world around me changed as well. Mass shootings, racism, the #metoo movement, a misogynistic bigoted narcissist in the White House ... go ahead, add to the list. Toss your woes into this dumpster fire we call 2019.  I appreciate my previous sentiment, that I was no longer wandering. But let's be honest, we're all trying to find our way through this mess. I decided to reboot the blog to give myself a creative outlet, a way to sort through the confusion and frustration and attempt to make sense of it all. I have a voice, and I'm not keen to silence it anymore. Guess what? I'm back, bitches.

In memoriam...

I remember the first time I heard the name "Les Anderson." A bunch of Wichita State University communication majors were sitting around on campus, talking about classes they planned to take. Several people warned me: watch out for Les Anderson. He was tough. He had a murderous grading scale. It was nearly impossible to get an A. They weren't kidding. But he wasn't tough just to be a tyrant. From his teaching sprang a fleet of incredible, successful journalists, writers, editors, broadcasters, public relations experts, advertisers, non-profit professionals...I could go on and on. Most importantly, he created a legion of people who wanted to make a difference in the world. The greatest gift Les gave to them all? He believed in them, cared about them for their own personal stories as well as the stories they told for class assignments or in the pages of his hometown newspaper. Les was my teacher. My boss. My mentor. My conscience. My champion. My friend. When I started c...
