As instructed on the sticker affixed to my new Discover card, I just called the toll-free number to activate the card. As I was trying -- rather unsuccessfully -- to converse with the customer service representative, I had a thought.

It might be, oh, I don't know, a pretty good idea if, when your job requires you to talk on the phone every day and be a spokesperson for your company, you could perhaps be able to TALK.

TIP: If you work in a call center and have laryngitis, GO HOME.

I remember the first time I heard the name "Les Anderson." A bunch of Wichita State University communication majors were sitting around on campus, talking about classes they planned to take. Several people warned me: watch out for Les Anderson. He was tough. He had a murderous grading scale. It was nearly impossible to get an A. They weren't kidding. But he wasn't tough just to be a tyrant.
