Is Larry Craig gay? Or is he not? Is he going to lose his job because he played footsie with an undercover cop in a bathroom, or because his right-wing homophobic constituents are afraid some sort of queer cooties will rub off on them?
I'm not getting into it.
I lose all patience (what little of it I have) when stories like this hit the media. Mostly I just feel sorry for Craig -- sorry that he can't admit who he is, not even to himself. Also sorry that he must resort to finding a sexual outlet in a public restroom. Mostly sorry that this has to be an issue at all, in 2007 when we have an openly gay congressman, Barney Frank, and even Vice President Cheney's own daughter is an out-and-proud lesbian. There are many, many more examples out there.
Ok. So I said I wasn't going to rant and moan and pound my head against a "stonewall." I can't help it. Do we take one step forward and two steps back? Bravo canceled Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. So maybe all bets are off.
Then again, CBS and Procter & Gamble recently showed some unexpected bravery, maturity and plain old guts when they OK'd a passionate kiss between Luke and Noah, teens grappling with their sexuality on As The World Turns. (If you'd like to see what all the little old ladies wrote and called to fuss about, here t'is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVsX9RnoHGk)
Just a reminder for everyone out there (you, too, Senator Craig)...National Coming Out Day is Oct. 11. Mark your calendars.
